MEDICAL ETHICS @ ISLAMIC MEDICINE PRACTITIONER

Witchcraft is one of the human efforts to find healing and solve problems.

In the sirah there is also a note that records the friend using a method similar to witchcraft which is required by the syarak for medical use.

However, this necessity can become illegal when the practices performed during witchcraft are contrary to Sharia.

The practice of shamanism that is inherited from generation to generation, especially in Malaysia, is heavily influenced by elements from other religions and some of those practices can cause a Muslim's belief to deviate if practiced.

For example, amulets that are used as intermediaries during witchcraft and spells use words that are not understood and prepare animals for sacrifice other than for Allah SWT.

Islam places great emphasis on aqeedah, sharia and morals. All practices and beliefs that are contrary to the Quran, Hadith, Ijmak and Qias are rejected.

In medical affairs for patients, one thing must be remembered by all parties, that only Allah SWT has the absolute power to determine something and make it happen, moreover, sickness and recovery are His rights, humans are only told to make efforts and strive.

According to the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Dictionary, a shaman is someone who treats a patient using traditional medicine or using spells to cure the disease.

But there are also shamans who are hired by people to use magic on other people for the purpose of harming other individuals. Thus, shamanism means any medical activity performed by a shaman.

In the history of Islam there is indeed a certain method of medicine as implemented by the Prophet SAW and the Companions RA. Apart from the usual medical methods, they have also used prayers, specifically to cure diseases.

However, they do not use methods or beliefs as understood by some parties that are not permitted by Shariah, such as calling the spirits of grandparents, guardians, sheikhs and certain khadams.

Today, the name shaman or charmer or shaman carries a negative connotation to some parties that refers to cases that have happened by giving a bad image, including doing practices that contradict the Islamic Shari'a that involve a threat to someone's life.

Thus, when awareness arose among Muslims, some of the shamans changed their appearance and modus operandi by using the name of Islamic Medical Practitioner so that some of them who really followed the sharia were also involved in the distortions brought.

Nevertheless, Muslims should always be careful when choosing to do medicine from those who hold the title of shaman or Islamic Medical Practitioner as per the guidelines published by JAKIM.

Among the goals of witchcraft that every Muslim needs to pay attention to;

  • Bohoman's goals should be good goals such as for the health of the body, harmony in community life and marriage.
  • It is absolutely forbidden to take revenge, persecute, intimidate, threaten others and other things that are against the Sharia.

In order to ensure that witchcraft does not conflict with Islamic teachings, the following should be identified;

  • Do not use any form of magic, black knowledge, fortune telling, astrologers, palmistry and magic.
  • Cannot associate a reinforcer with a consequence.
  • Can't believe in bad luck that befalls someone or oneself.
  • It is not allowed to do things that have elements of shirk such as visiting the beach, slaughtering animals and others.
  • It is not permissible to slaughter an animal for a purpose that is not syar'ie.
  • Shamanism or certain readings that use the elements of asking for permission or help from the powers of 'unseen' beings in shamanism events cannot be performed.
  • Can't serve food to entertain waiters.
  • It is not permissible to obey a shaman or someone in matters that clearly contradict the Islamic creed and sharia.
  • Rejecting any given condition that is against Islamic creed, Sharia and morals.

Related to shamans or Islamic Medical Practitioners;

  • Shaman must be Muslim, aqil and mature and know what he is saying.
  • Not doing things that can lead to shirk, whether through I'tikad, word or deed.
  • Don't leave the obligatory acts of worship in Islam such as obligatory prayers, fasting and zakat.
  • Do not commit immorality, crime and that which is against the law of the country.
  • Do not divide society and family.
  • Do not interpret the teachings of Islam according to lust.
  • Do not include or use elements that conflict with Islam such as magic, black magic and descent because its practitioners are included in the category of summoners of demons and devils with inappropriate speeches or can lead to kufr and shirk.
  • It is not permissible to make friends and ask for help with supernatural beings such as jinn with the aim of getting help in matters prohibited by the Sharia.
  • Can't make predictions about bad or good in the future.
  • Should be sincere with practice, simply seeking the pleasure of Allah SWT.

Muslims should also not blindly obey shamans or Islamic medical practitioners. They can follow the instructions of a certain shaman as long as it does not conflict with Islamic law.

It should be remembered that every individual or group cannot claim that their witchcraft comes from the Prophet Muhammad SAW, the prophets or taken from the Qur'an and hadith or from the practice of the companions of the Prophet SAW or others if there is no reason or strong support based on the text Quran and Hadith.
