Prayer When Returning from Travel

By Natirah Azira

When someone travels a long journey to a place, exceeding two marhalahs or 81 kilometers, they are called a traveler.

As many people know, there are sunnah things that are encouraged to be done, such as sunnah prayers before traveling and increasing prayers during the journey.

However, there is another Sunnah practice that was carried out by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions regarding this journey. Narrated by Anas bin Malik RA, he said:

When we returned with the Prophet (PBUH), Abu Talhah and Safiyyah riding camels and when we approached the city of Medina, the Prophet (PBUH) recited:

Returning, repentant, worshipping, and praising our Lord.

It means: “We return with repentance, continue to worship and always praise our Lord.”

The Prophet (PBUH) recited this supplication until we arrived in Medina.  [Narrated by Muslim (1345)] [This hadith was also narrated by Imam al-Bukhari in the chapter on supplication when a person wants to travel or return home]

This prayer can also be referred to in Imam al-Nawawi's famous book, Al-Azkar. In fact, Syeikh Muhyiddin al-Mistu commented that this prayer is recommended to be recited upon arrival at home to express gratitude for the blessings of safety that Allah has bestowed upon us.

So, why not add another simple sunnah practice when we travel long distances anywhere. In this way, may we always remember the blessings of Allah SWT wherever we are. Wallahu'alam.
