A Dakwah Short Story: A Whisper in the City of Makkah
The atmosphere in Makkah during the Hajj season is always filled with a quiet trembling of hearts. Thousands of pilgrims move in and out of their maktab, hotels, and the sacred mosques — all walking with one purpose, one longing: to complete the pilgrimage in surrender to Allah.
One day, my father, Cikgu Haji Ahmad Fadzil Haji Ashaari, boarded a lift in a maktab along with three other pilgrims. The lift moved normally at first… until it suddenly shook violently, swaying as if it might plunge downward.
With worry tightening his voice, my father said softly,
“Something's not right with this lift… it’s shaking. If it falls, people may die…”
One of his companions quickly turned to him and whispered gently,
“Ssshh… don’t say things like that, cikgu. This is Makkah… here, words become prayers, and prayers become reality. We don’t want misfortune to happen.”
My father immediately fell silent, whispering astaghfirullah under his breath. The lift eventually stopped safely, and they stepped out unharmed. None of them spoke further about it.
The decree of Allah unfolded in a way none of them expected.
Three days after the incident, the same lift truly fell.
The tragedy took the lives of three workers from the Philippines.
When the news reached them, my father and his companions were stunned into silence. They never mentioned the swaying lift to anyone during their stay in Makkah. It was only after returning home that my father finally shared the story — a secret that had lived quietly in his heart throughout the pilgrimage.

His words that day, spoken in fear, felt almost like a premonition. Even though he had been reminded not to say such things, Allah showed His power — that in the Holy Land, every word, every whisper, every flicker of the heart carries weight.
Today, my father and his three companions have gone back to their eternal home, leaving this world with calmness and faith.
This story remains a gentle reminder for all of us:
Guard your words, especially in the Holy Land — every utterance becomes a supplication.
Allah’s decree is certain, sometimes revealed through intuition, sometimes through events we never saw coming.
Every journey of Hajj is a form of dakwah — not merely an act of worship, but a collection of life lessons that stay with us forever.
Al-Fatihah for my father,
Cikgu Haji Ahmad Fadzil Haji Ashaari
May Allah place him among His righteous servants.
