"I have so many sins that Allah tests me like this."
Many times we hear these words come from the lips of people who are being tested. Or maybe we have said them ourselves. As if the test is a punishment for the many sins committed.
There is a tone of resignation, there is also a tone of repentance. But let us not think that trials are a benchmark for how much a person has sinned. Let us not hold that the many trials a person has means that he is a person who has sinned a lot. Instead, see it as a space to cleanse oneself. God gives him more space to cleanse himself from sin than others. Doesn't that sound more full of hope and goodness?
Why do I say that testing is a space and an opportunity?
Because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) himself mentioned in an authentic hadith that from Abu Sa'id Al Khudri and Abu Hurairah RA, from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“No Muslim is afflicted with sickness, fatigue, anxiety, sadness, harm, or distress, even if it is hurt by a thorn, but Allah will expiate his sins for that.” (Hadith narrated by al-Bukhari, No: 5641, Muslim, No: 2573, at-Tirmidhi, No: 966, Ahmad, No: 7684, 8070, 10714)
Does it sound like a punishment or an opportunity?
The trials mentioned here include illness, annoyance, sadness, distraction, hardship, and even fatigue. All of them are opportunities for our sins and mistakes to be erased.
Imagine, the fatigue of managing a household and children becomes a space for our sins to be erased. The interruptions we receive from people's talk are also a space for our mistakes to be erased. Even if there is a wound on the finger, it also becomes a space for purification. There are many spaces that God gives so that we can always purify ourselves from mistakes.
Even believing Muslims are not exempt from committing sins every day, big or small. Logically, we can imagine that the sin bank will always increase, but with testing, a person's sin bank can decrease.
Therefore, be at peace and remember when trials come. Don't complain first, instead hold your chest and remind your soul that Allah is giving us a lot of space. Think good of Allah and don't just think that Allah is punishing us through the hardships we have to face.
