THE RELATION BETWEEN THE BOX AND OUR DEATH

Narrated by Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:

“The Prophet ﷺ once drew a square, and then drew a line in the middle extending out beyond it. He also drew several small lines alongside the central line, on both its sides. Then he said:
‘This represents man, and this (the square) represents his appointed term (his lifespan) that surrounds him or has encompassed him. The line extending outside represents his hopes, and these small lines are the obstacles (trials). If one obstacle misses him, another will strike him; and if that one misses him, another will afflict him.’”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 5938)

This hadith is famously known as the Hadith of the Box.

In general, human beings share a common nature: we love to dream, to plan, and to set ambitions for the future — “In five years, I’ll do this… in ten years, I’ll achieve that.” Such is the nature of mankind — our hopes are long, and our ambitions are great.

Yet, behind these hopes lie countless challenges and trials that one must endure in pursuit of those goals and plans.

However, many of us forget about the box — the boundary that represents our lifespan. Our lives are confined within that unseen box of fate drawn by Allah.

You may have dreams stretching until the age of sixty, but Allah may have destined your life to end at twenty-nine.
You may plan to live until forty, but Allah may decree that your “box” ends tomorrow.

Even so, does Allah forbid us from having dreams and ambitions? Absolutely not.

What truly matters is this: within all our plans and pursuits, have we prepared ourselves to meet our death? Have we secured the pleasure of our Creator in this short life?

Because at any moment — without warning — Allah may close the box of our lives.
