AURAT VS SHARIAH: MANNERS ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND ADVERTISING

Social media is an online platform that allows users to share, participate, and create content through social networks and virtual worlds.

Social media such as Telegram, Whatsapp, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Blogs are platforms commonly used by humans globally.

Delivery in social media is sometimes in the form of information, data, graphics or pictures.

But in today's technological sophistication, we are still required to always be on the path set in Islam.

The activity of taking selfies and sharing photos on social media is not wrong, but there should be limits in order to maintain Islamic manners by covering the aurat perfectly, whether for advertising purposes or others.

Prohibition of viewing private parts

Allah SWT has commanded us to always preserve and guard our eyes from seeing things that are unlawful as stated in Surah An-Nur verse 30-31 meaning

Say (O Muhammad) to the believing men that they restrain their gaze (from looking at what is forbidden), and preserve their honor. Such is more sacred for them; Indeed, God is very deep in His knowledge of what they do ."

According to Imam Nawawi in  the Syarah Sahih Muslim , the law of looking at aurat ajnabi whether for men or women is haram by consensus  .

Therefore  ,  it is a duty for Muslims to ensure that they always take care of their private parts regardless of the circumstances.

Dress Etiquette

Islam has outlined dressing guidelines so as not to cause feelings of lust and slander to those who see it, including on social media.

Among the prohibitions and commands in Islam are:

a) Dress in a way that does not resemble the clothes of the other gender. The Prophet SAW said:

"On the authority of Abu Hurairah who said that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) cursed men who wear women's clothes and women who wear men's clothes"  (Narrated by Abu Daud)

b) Not wearing clothes that are tight enough to reveal the shape of the body.

c) Should wear clothes that cover all private parts.

d) Do not wear clothes that are so thin that the color of the skin and the shadow of the body parts are visible. Imam Ibn Hajar al-Haitami mentions this problem in the book  Minhaj al-Qawin :  "And the condition of clothing (to cover the aurat) is what can cover and not show the color of the skin".

Tabarruj

Sometimes people, especially women, overlook the importance of  tabbaruj  when they take selfies for public viewing, including pictures on billboards.

Imam al-Syaukani in the book  Fath al-Qadir  stated, that  al-Tabarruj  is to show and display (jewelry and its beauty) for the eyes (to see and enjoy it).

Islam does not prohibit decorating to look neat, clean and not dull as long as it does not aim to attract the attention and interest of the viewer.

Therefore, in the book  al-Mausu'ah al-Fiqhiyyah al-Kuwaitiyyah,  it is stated that  excessive  tabarruj is feared to increase the lust and lust of those who look at it.

The scholars have agreed, it is forbidden to display beauty except to the husband.

Although Islam gives flexibility and space to decorate, but do not be too easy to exceed the limits and finally fall into the haram.

Lose Shame

A few people are easily influenced by western culture and do shameful things.

Among them, they are proud on social media with  the trend of unboxing  the bride and groom, hugging, kissing, showing off  the baby bump  and dancing tik tok with exciting dances and so on.

Indeed, shyness is a trait that teaches us to always adorn ourselves with noble and praiseworthy traits.

This is because the nature of shame can prevent and distance us from committing any form of sin, bad behavior, contempt and reprehensibility.

Shame will also make a person to be more careful in every gesture and behavior whether in terms of words or actions. Humans need to have a sense of shame because it acts as a barrier from committing immorality and things that are forbidden in religion.

The words of the Prophet SAW which mean:

"Indeed, one of the things people have learned from the words of the previous Prophet is that if you are not ashamed, then do what you want." (Al-Bukhari's narration)

after'

In today's situation, wara' and caution should be prioritized when worried about pictures that have been uploaded to social media or billboards that can cause defamation.

This matter is forbidden based on the method of  Sad Zari'ah , which is to prevent obligatory things that can lead to haram.

It is supported by fiqh methods ie

What leads to what is forbidden is  forbidden

"anything that leads to the haram, then it is haram".

Therefore, all immoral things should be avoided as much as possible because they will have a bad effect both in the short and long term.

Conclusion

The use of social media in a civilized way is to teach oneself to be a Muslim who has piety to Allah SWT, then to be a role model and show the image of a Muslim with noble character and full of respect for the surrounding community.
