Sheikh Hammad Al-Ansari, a Leading Figure in the Science of Hadith

When we study the science of hadith, we will certainly see many names of great figures and scholars in this field. To collect and ensure that the hadith is authentic or not is not an easy task.

So, this entry will bring to your attention a great figure in the field of hadith.

He is Sheikh Hammad Al-Ansari or his real name is Hammad bin Muhammad Al-Ansari Al-Khazraji Al-Sa'di.

He was born in 1343 AH in Taad Makkah, Mali, East Africa.

His persistence in seeking knowledge was so great that he was willing to migrate from his country to Mecca simply to seek knowledge from a great teacher.

Among the great figures who have become his teachers are Sheikh Muhammad 'Abdur-Razzaaq Hamzah who taught Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Sheikh Abu Muhammad 'Abdul Haqq al-Amree al-Haashimee al-Hindee who taught Sahih Imam Bukhari and Sheikh Hasan Al-Mashaat who taught Sunan At-Tirmizi.

Actually, before that, he had studied with his uncle who had a very wide range of knowledge. His uncle was Sheikh Al-Muqri, Muhammad ibn Ahmad who taught him the knowledge of the Quran and hadith.

In fact, when he was 8 years old, he had successfully memorized the Quran and hadith. Not stopping there, when he reached adolescence, at the age of 15, he had mastered the fields of grammar and orthography (branches of Arabic language knowledge).

The Nature of His Love for Science

Because he loved knowledge so much, it was not enough for him to seek knowledge in Mecca, so he moved to Medina to master the field of hadith.

He also spent a lot of his time reviewing and memorizing existing hadiths.

Not only that, he has become a point of reference for many scholars and other knowledge seekers.

When we talk about people who love knowledge, we certainly know that their favorite place is the library.

The same goes for Sheikh Hammad Al-Ansari who spent a lot of time in the library because for him it was one of the depths of knowledge that needed to be explored.

It was here that he successfully authored several books related to hadith. It is said that there are more than three thousand volumes of books, the majority of which are in the field of hadith, that he has successfully compiled.

Among his works that are often referred to to this day are Abu al-Hasan al-Ash'ari wa Aqidatuhu (creed) and al-Ajwibah al-Wafiyah'an Asilah al-Alfiyah (compiling fatwas on jurisprudence).

He died on 21 Jamadil Akhir 1418 AH and was prayed at the Prophet's Mosque Al-Syarif by Sheikh Abdul Bari.

Among his wills that are often remembered to this day and should be remembered by all students of knowledge are;

"I am not a mufti, but I am only a servant to those seeking knowledge."
