BEWARE OF GHADIR DAY WELCOME

'Idul Ghadir or Ghadir Day Celebration is a great day celebrated by the Shia Imamiyah on every 10th of Zulhijah. Today is the day that the Shia Imamiyah believe that Ali bin Abi Talib RA received the official appointment of Rasulullah SAW as the successor and heir to His Majesty SAW. This event is also known as the Ghadir Khum event .

It was narrated by Al-Saduq that on 18 Zulhijah, 10 Hijrah, Rasulullah SAW was on his way home from completing the Hajj in Mecca. When His Majesty SAW arrived at a place called Khum, between Mecca and Medina, His Majesty SAW stopped the group who were residents of Medina, rather than among the Muhajirin and Ansar. His Majesty SAW then stood with Ali bin Abi Talib RA then raised Ali bin Abi Talib RA's hand, saying:

"Indeed, I remind you of two heavy things, namely the Koran, and the People of My Temple. Indeed, the two of them will not be separated until they meet me in heaven. Whoever I was his mawla before, then Ali is his mawla. O Allah, protect whoever protects him, help whoever helps him, enemy whoever is hostile to him, humble whoever humiliates him, and give him the truth wherever he is."

The Shiites really adhere to this history, in fact they really mean this event. So Al-Qummi in his tafsir narrated from Al-Saduq, that after His Majesty SAW uttered these words, Rasulullah SAW looked towards the sky and said:

"Oh Allah, didn't I tell you?" .

Then Jibril AS came down to His Majesty SAW, conveying verse 3 of Surah Al-Maidah, namely:

Today I have perfected your religion for you, and I have completed My blessings for you, and I am pleased with you about Islam as a religion ."

This famous verse is accused by Al-Qummi that the perfection of religion mentioned in the verse, hints at the inauguration of Ali bin Abi Talib RA as the successor of Rasulullah SAW. This verse did not come down, only after the Prophet Muhammad SAW announced the inauguration of Ali bin Abi Talib RA in front of His Majesty SAW's entire entourage.

Thus, the Shiites raised this day from the 3rd century of the Hijrah. Al-Mas'udi claims that the descendants of Ali bin Abi Talib RA, and the followers of Ali bin Abi Talib RA really celebrate this day. Al-Kulaini also claimed that the Ghadir Day celebration was celebrated by Ali Al-Rida, an individual who was accused of being the 8th Infallible Imam on the Shia Imamiyah side of the Twelve Imam School.

From the time of the Shia Ismaili Safavid rule in Iran, until now, this celebration is still welcomed on a large scale. The holy city of Najaf celebrated this day with a party at the Ali Bin Abi Talib RA Mosque, with worship services and lectures by prominent Shia preachers.

Shia also specialize this Ghadir Day with special worship. Among them is the 'Eid al-Ghadir circumcision prayer which is performed during the Zohor prayer. Al-Tusi narrated in Tahzibul Ahkam, that this prayer consists of two rak'ahs, and in each rak'ah after reciting Al-Fatihah, surah Al-Ikhlas is read 10 times, then 10 times Ayatul Kursi, and finished with 10 times Surah Al-Qadr. Al-Tusi also stated that this prayer contains rewards equivalent to 100 pilgrimages, 100 umrahs and is guaranteed to provide for all needs in this world and in the afterlife.

Apart from the 'Eid al-Ghadir' circumcision prayer, Shiites also claim circumcision to fast on Ghadir Day. This practice is based on a hadith which reads:

"Whoever fasts on 18 Zulhijah (Ghadir Day) then Allah SWT will write down the reward for him as if he had fasted for 6 months."

Ghadir Day is also one of the four Shia holidays ( 'Eid al-Fitr, 'Eid al-Adha, 'Eid al-Ghadir and Jumaat) during which the Nudbah prayer is celebrated . This prayer is a prayer attributed to Ja'far Al-Sadiq. It contains elements of moaning, crying and asking for help from Muhammad bin Al-Hasan Al-Mahdi. In it there is also a mention regarding the inauguration of Ali bin Abi Talib RA as the successor of Rasulullah SAW.

This celebration, in essence, is not a celebration based on valid sources. The Ghadir Khum hadith and the Al-Tsaqalayn hadith which are used as basic sources for the Shia to magnify the events of Ali bin Abi Talib RA's inauguration are essentially not what the Shia claim. The Ghadir Khum incident occurred when several of R. Anhum's friends disputed Ali bin Abi Talib RA's decision regarding the distribution of ghanimah from Yemen. This incident does not mean the inauguration of Rasulullah SAW's successor, because something as big as that should have been mentioned by His Majesty SAW in the Wada' Sermon which involved all Muslims, not just the residents of Madinah from among the Muhajirin and Ansar alone. There are too many other narrations that justify the inauguration of Abu Bakar RA, Hatta Ali bin Abi Talib RA accepted the inauguration of Abu Bakar RA as the successor of Rasulullah SAW.
