It is common knowledge that there is an exemption provided for Muslims who are traveling to perform prayers, namely qasar prayers. Qasar prayers are shortening the prayer, from four rakaats to two rakaats.
One of the conditions for performing this qasar prayer is when the journey has reached 81km.
The wisdom behind this relaxation is that long journeys are not easy, even though times have changed and many conveniences have become available compared to travelers during the time of the Prophet and his companions. A long journey will still tire the body, especially during public holidays and festivals.
However, the question arises whether we can choose a longer route to reach a destination on the grounds of obtaining the exemption from qasar prayers. Is this permissible?
For the Syafi'i School, there are two circumstances when it comes to choosing this path.
Firstly , if he chooses a longer route (more than 81 km) compared to a shorter route (not more than 81 km) because he intentionally wants to shorten his prayer, then he cannot shorten his prayer.
Secondly , if he chooses a longer route because there is a solid reason such as saving on toll fees, being safer or to avoid traffic congestion, then he can perform a shortened prayer.
This matter is based on the statement of Imam al-Nawawi:
Meaning: “ If his destination has two roads, one of which is far away and the other is close, and he takes the far road for certain reasons such as it is easier or safer, then he must shorten his prayer. As for if he does it without a reason, then he cannot shorten his prayer. ”
Scholars of the Syafi'i School also equate people who deliberately choose a long route to shorten their prayers with people who lengthen their steps (walking left and right), and this is clearly not permissible.
This law is also taken based on the method mentioned by Imam al-Zarkasyi:
" Indeed, deliberately taking the reasons for permission to allow permission is not allowed. "
Therefore, check our journey and make sure it has met the conditions that are allowed for qasar. May honesty in deeds make our worship more valuable in the sight of Allah SWT.
