DREAMS AND THEIR POSITION ON THE SIDE OF ISLAM

When the world was shocked by the disappearance of flight MH 370 on March 8, 2014, there were Muslim nurses who claimed to have dreamed of the plane's location. In August 2021, an allegation by a woman who claimed to dream that the Third World War would start in Sabah caused a stir. This is one of the 2 examples of deviations in interpreting dreams that cause negative implications for society.

Al-Quran touches on this dream phenomenon through several verses and stories related to it. Behind the truth of the existence of dreams and their interpretation, there is an issue which is the problem of distortion and wrong interpretation of dreams. This issue not only causes concern in the community, it can even cause damage to faith, especially when it is used as an instrument for predicting and predicting. So, do dreams have categories and how reliable are they?

Forms of Dreams

Regarding the form of dreams, the Prophet SAW said:

There are three types of dreams: a good dream that is good news from God, a sad dream that is from Satan, and a dream that is from what a person thinks about himself.

If one of you sees something he dislikes, let him stand up and pray, and not tell people about it.

Meaning:  "The dream has three forms. A good dream is good news from Allah SWT. That sad dream is from the devil. And dreams caused by what happened to that person. If anyone dreams of something bad, he should perform circumcision prayers, and he should not tell others about his dream." [Muslim: 2263]

From the hadith above it can be understood that the dream is divided into three types namely:

  1. A dream that comes from God.
  2. A dream from the devil.
  3. Dreams that originate from what is experienced or thought in daily life.

Of the three types of dreams above, scholars believe that only the first category of dreams can be interpreted. This type of dream was experienced by Prophets and Messengers as well as ordinary people like us. Although in the same category, the method of interpreting this dream is different.

  1. Dreams of Prophets and Messengers

    Dreams experienced by Prophets and Messengers are clear and do not need interpretation. It is a form of revelation. For example, Prophet Ibrahim as dreamed of slaughtering his son Prophet Ismail (Al-Saafat: 102) and Prophet Muhammad SAW who dreamed of entering the city of Mecca in a state of ihram (al-Fath: 27).
  2. Common human dreams

    Dreams like this are usually in the form of images or examples. This dream is experienced by ordinary people and becomes a guide to them. For example, verses 43-49 of Surah Yusuf tell the story of the king of Egypt who dreamed of seeing 7 fat cows being eaten by 7 lean cows, 7 stalks of green wheat and 7 stalks of dry wheat. The dream needs to be interpreted by its experts because it is impossible for an omnivorous animal like a cow to eat another cow in the real world.

Dream Interpretation Terms

When the king of Egypt told his dream to the officials, they said that the king's dream was a nonsense dream (أَضغاثُ أَحلامٍ). But when it was told to Prophet Yusuf who had knowledge about it, then the dream was a message that saved the future of the Egyptian people. Therefore, to interpret dreams, not just anyone can do it. He needs to have specific characteristics and criteria as mentioned in the Al-Quran:

  1. Has reached the rank of Muhsinin

The dream interpreter must be trustworthy, honest and sincere. This is based on God's words about the story of 2 young men who asked Prophet Yusuf to interpret their dreams;

We see you among the doers of good.

We found you (Oh Yusuf) from the people who do kindness ." (Yusuf: 36)

  1. Corroborative

The dream interpreter must be truthful in actions, conversations and intentions. This is based on the word of God (when the king of Egypt said);

Joseph, O righteous man

Oh Yusuf is a very righteous person (in all matters) ." (Yusuf: 46)

  1. Investigate and understand the condition of someone who asks for a dream interpretation

A dream interpreter must be a wise and thorough person in interpreting a dream. He cannot casually interpret dreams without knowing a person's background or the surrounding environment. This is based on the use of the word "نَبِّئنا" in verse 36 of surah Yusuf which refers to 2 young men (ordinary people) who asked about their fate. While the word used by the king is "أَفتِنا " or " give guidance (fatwa) to us " in surah Yusuf verse 46 referring to the position of the king who acts for the benefit of the people.

To explain this, the story that happened between the most famous dream interpreters in Islam, Sheikh Muhammad bin Sirin and Sheikh Hasan Al-Basri, is a good example. One night, Sheikh Hasan al-Basri dreamed that he was in an animal enclosure naked while holding a stick. Since he had a little conflict with Ibnu Sirin, he told his student to ask Ibnu Sirin what the interpretation of his dream was. After the student narrated the dream, Ibnu Sirin continued to say that the student did not deserve to have such a dream. He then told the students to tell the owner of the dream to come and meet him. Finally, Sheikh Hasan al-Basri had to come and tell his dream. Ibnu Sirin interprets that the animal cage is a reference to the dirty world, the naked state refers to Sheikh Hasan who has thrown away all desire for the dirty world, while the stick is a sign that Sheikh Hasan is the right guide and savior of the people. Ibnu Sirin stated that no one deserves such a dream except a pious person like Hasan al-Basri.

  1. Dream interpretation must be in line with the Quran or Hadith

Allah SWT said:

So if you disagree about anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final outcome.

"If you disagree on something, then you should return it to the (Book) of Allah (Al-Quran) and the (Sunnah) of His Messenger - if you truly believe in Allah and the Hereafter. That is better for you and contains the best guidance.” (An-Nisa': 59)

In interpreting dreams, the best references are the Quran and the hadith of the Prophet SAW. This is one of the things done by Sheikh Ibnu Sirin. One day, he was visited by 2 men who dreamed the same thing, which is that they heard the call to prayer. Ibnu Sirin stated that the first man would perform Hajj while the second man would be slandered as a thief. After the two left, the students asked why the dream was the same but the interpretation was different. So Ibnu Sirin stated that the first man was a pious and good-natured person. So according to the situation with his dream with the words of Allah SWT:

And proclaim to mankind the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every leg.

"And call mankind to perform the Hajj, surely they will come to your (house of God) on foot..." (Al-Hajj:27)

While the second man is a wicked and bad-mannered person. So according to the situation with his dream based on the words of Allah SWT;

Then a crier called out, “O caravan, you are surely thieves.”

Then called a caller: "O people of this caravan, indeed you are thieves". (Yusuf: 70)

Devil tricks in dreams

A dream is a supernatural message that needs to be researched and refined. Satan likes to take advantage of the supernatural to deceive human power. Among the things that need to be emphasized in the dream interpretation chapter are:

  1. Dreams cannot be used as a basis for Islamic law. It can only be used as a guide in making a decision.
  1. Knowledge received through dreams, especially medical and spiritual knowledge, cannot be practiced except after asking for an opinion and confirmation from a person who has knowledge in this field. Without guidance from a teacher, this person will be trapped in the devil's trick known as istidraj .
  1. Bad dreams are a demonic disturbance, but they are not a definitive sign of man-made influence. It may happen because a person has committed wrongful practices such as wearing amulets, practicing superstitions, keeping objects of worship or inheriting them from descendants.

Conclusion

Dreams are one of the signs of God's power. If one wants to be interpreted, one needs to have deep wisdom and knowledge, and must not be misused.
