Human Groups Deprived of Allah’s Guidance in Tafsîr al-Munîr

Human Groups Deprived of Allah’s Guidance in Tafsîr al-Munîr: A Brief Analysis

Based on the interpretations of Wahbah az-Zuhaili

Abstract
This short article summarizes the classification of human groups who are deprived of Allah’s guidance (hidayah) according to Tafsîr al-Munîr, the monumental exegesis written by Wahbah az-Zuhaili. Through thematic analysis of Qur’anic verses, the study identifies five categories of individuals who lose divine guidance due to their moral, spiritual, and behavioral choices. The article also highlights the consequences of such deprivation and outlines steps that can help believers attain and preserve divine guidance.

Introduction

Guidance (hidayah) is central in Islam and essential for a person’s spiritual success. Muslims repeatedly ask for this guidance in every unit of prayer through the supplication, “Ihdinā á¹£-á¹£irāṭ al-mustaqÄ«m” (Guide us to the straight path). According to Wahbah az-Zuhaili, receiving Allah’s guidance is the greatest blessing, whereas being deprived of it is a severe spiritual loss. In Tafsîr al-Munîr, Az-Zuhaili identifies several types of people who are prevented from receiving guidance because of their own actions, attitudes, and rejection of truth.

Groups Deprived of Allah’s Guidance

1. The Unjust (Ẓālimūn)

Az-Zuhaili describes ẓulm as wronging oneself by rejecting truth, following desires, or turning away from divine signs. These individuals block their own hearts from understanding, and as a result, Allah does not grant them tawfīq toward righteousness. Their injustice includes idolatry, corruption, oppression, and knowingly disobeying Allah.

2. The Disbelievers (Kāfirūn)

This group includes those who knowingly deny the truth after recognizing it. Az-Zuhaili notes three subcategories:

  1. disbelievers who later repent,

  2. People of the Book who rejected Prophet Muhammad despite prior knowledge, and

  3. those who die in a state of disbelief.
Their persistent rejection closes the path of guidance, and they remain subject to divine punishment.

3. The Rebellious (Fāsiqūn)

The fāsiq are those who intentionally disobey Allah and violate His laws. They knowingly break away from divine commands and persist in wrongdoing. Their rebellion invalidates their credibility, including in matters such as testimony, and results in Allah withholding guidance from them.

4. The Hypocrites (Munāfiqūn)

Hypocrites outwardly claim faith while concealing disbelief. Az-Zuhaili highlights their traits: lying, betrayal, cowardice, manipulation, and taking advantage of both believers and disbelievers for personal gain. Because their hearts are corrupt, they are placed in the lowest depths of Hell and are denied divine guidance.

5. Those Excessive in Lying

Az-Zuhaili explains that habitual liars—especially those who invent falsehoods about Allah, His religion, or His prophets—lose the capacity to perceive truth. Their repeated lying creates a spiritual barrier that prevents any form of guidance from reaching them.

How to Attain Allah’s Guidance

The article also outlines essential steps to preserve and obtain guidance:

  • Strengthening Tawhid: Rejecting all forms of shirk and relying solely on Allah.

  • Sincere Repentance (Taubah Nasuha): Regretting sins, seeking forgiveness, and committing not to return to wrongdoing.

  • Istiqamah: Maintaining consistency in obedience and worship.
These practices cleanse the heart and make it receptive to divine guidance.

Conclusion

Tafsîr al-Munîr offers a clear framework for understanding why certain individuals are deprived of Allah’s guidance. According to Az-Zuhaili, deprivation is not arbitrary but results from deliberate choices—such as injustice, disbelief, rebellion, hypocrisy, and persistent lying. At the same time, Allah’s guidance remains open to all who sincerely seek it through tawhid, repentance, and steadfastness. The study reminds believers of the profound importance of safeguarding their hearts and actions so they remain worthy recipients of divine guidance.
