Abu Yusuf Ya'qub bin Ishaq al-Khindi or better known as Al-Khindi was the earliest Arab philosopher in the history of Islamic philosophy.
He was known as Al-Khindi by his family name. In Latin, he was also known as Alkindus.
Al-Khindi was born in Kufa in the ninth century AD, around 801 AD.
Some historical records mention that he was the son of the governor in Kufa, during the time of the caliphs Al-Mahdi (775 AD - 785 AD), Al-Hadi (785 AD - 876 AD) and Harun Al-Rashid (786 AD - 909 AD).
It shows that his lineage is from a lineage of great leadership.
He grew up in the same era as great figures such as Al-Mamun, Al-Mu'tasim and al-Mutawakkil.
They never underestimated the importance of knowledge. Because of this, his family placed great emphasis on knowledge and he succeeded in studying the Quran, Arabic grammar, literature and mathematics at a very young age.
The city of Kufa at that time was famous for its rapid development of Islamic knowledge and culture. This situation further increased his enthusiasm in seeking knowledge.
In order to further develop his knowledge, he left Kufa and headed to Baghdad to translate and study philosophy.
Apart from Arabic, he was also proficient in Greek and Syriac. This enabled him to help improve the translation of works such as those by Ibn Na'ima al-Himsi.
He is known as the greatest Muslim philosopher because many of his works have become references to this day. In fact, Al-Farabi and Ibn Sina also referred to his works.
His works are divided into various fields, namely; philosophy, astronomy, medicine and mathematics.
Among his famous works is fi al-falsafat al-'ula , which is the earliest work based on the philosophical thoughts of Aristotle and Plato.
Through this work, he defined philosophy as the knowledge of things that cannot be reached by human thought. For him, the main goals of philosophers are divided into two, namely in theoretical and practical forms.
In theory, they are responsible for seeking the truth, while in practice they need to act in accordance with the truth.
It also encompasses the human ability to recognize the true nature of divine knowledge, oneness, as well as knowledge about things that have a good effect on a person and how to stay away from things that are harmful.
According to him, philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle had their own views and thoughts on philosophy and reason.
Because of that, he wanted to present clear views, especially those related to Islamic knowledge and religion.
Not only that, he was not left behind in other fields of knowledge such as geography, music, geology, sword making and even cooking.
Because of this, he was able to produce a variety of works because they covered a wide range of fields. It is narrated that he successfully produced 270 works.
There is no clear record of his death date, but his contributions to the field of knowledge were recognized by the naming of a hospital after him, namely the Al-Kindi Public Hospital, which is the largest medical center in Baghdad.
