LOVE THE ORPHANS

PREFACE

Islam is a religion that cares and loves orphans. This is reflected through  the qudwah hasanah  (a good example) by His Majesty the Prophet SAW when he treats orphans with love and kindness.

This is because His Majesty, who once grew up as an orphan, understands the psychology and feelings that play in the minds of orphans. In the tradition of Islamic scholars, the debate related to orphans is one of the important debates that covers matters of manners, morals, muamalah, fiqh and others.

Furthermore, Muhammad bin Ismail bin Ibrahim bin al-Ju'fiy al-Bukhari or better known as Imam Bukhari (256H) also named a sub topic in his work  'al-Adab al-Mufrad'  (Simply Manners) with the title ' كتاب الْكَرَمِ ÙˆÙŽ يَتِيمٌ' (Kitab  al-Karami wa Yatimun ) which means 'Book about generous behavior and orphans.

In the sub-topic, Imam Bukhari has divided into 9 sub-headings that bring together the hadiths of being generous and being fatherly to orphans, loving, feeding and disciplining orphans and empowering orphans.

DALIL AL-QUR'AN AND HADITH REGARDING ENCOURAGEMENT TO CARE FOR ORPHANS

Orphans are a kindness

Al-Quran clearly mentions the affairs of orphans. Allah SWT said which means,

"And they ask you (O Muhammad) about the orphans. Say that doing good to them (orphans) is a good thing."  (Surah Al-Baqarah verse 220).

Allah SWT also forbids being rude to orphans. This is explained in surah ad-Dhuha verse 9, where Allah SWT says which means.

"Therefore, as for orphans, then you should not be rude to them," .

Allah SWT also curses the person who manages the property of orphans in a cruel way and eats them. This is based on the words of Allah SWT which means,

"Indeed, those who eat the property of orphans unjustly, in fact they are only swallowing fire into their stomachs; and they will go into the blazing fire of hell."  (Surah an-Nisaa' verse 10).

Allah SWT said which means,

And do not approach the property of an orphan except in the best way until the child reaches puberty ." (Surah Al-An'aam verse 152).

In a hadith, His Majesty the Prophet SAW said which means,

Whoever takes care of an orphan and gives him food and drink, God will admit him to heaven, unless he commits an unforgivable sin. ” (Riwayat al-Tirmidzi, no. 1917).

Through the verses of the Qur'an and the hadith above, it can be understood,  the meaning of mukhalafah , Islam encourages its people to love and not be cruel to orphans.

EXPLOITATION OF ORPHAN CHILDREN

Picture 2

Islam forbids any act that degrades or exploits orphans either personally or their property. Previously, there were reports in the print media and social media related to the issue of exploitation of orphans.

This matter is very sad especially when this act is done by a person who has the title of Muslim. In 2018, the Pahang Department of Social Welfare (JKM) confirmed that a total of 29 children in a care center of an orphan welfare organization in Temerloh here, were believed to have been molested and abused.

In 2021, the media reported a case of abuse against an orphan with an OKU status named Bella, also a case of abuse committed by an adoptive family and many more. The headlines displayed in the media are very heartbreaking for the readers, not to mention if the parents of these orphans are still alive and see how their children are treated, they must be crushed and broken hearted due to the deep sadness.

INITIATIVE OF THE ISLAMIC COUNCIL OF SELANGOR (MAIS) IN SUPPORTING ORPHANS

"A person who takes care of his own or other people's orphans, he and I are like these two fingers in heaven"

In 2011, His Majesty Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Al-Haj, Sultan of the State of Selangor visited the victims of a landslide involving Al-Taqwa Orphanage in Hulu Langat district, Selangor.

As a continuation of the event, the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) has taken the initiative to establish the Yayasan Islam Darul Ehsan (YIDE) to manage all affairs related to orphans within the State of Selangor which were previously managed by the Baitulmal Sector, MAIS.

In 2019, YIDE has organized several programs to celebrate orphans in the State of Selangor. The programs implemented include the 2019 Khatan Perdana program in collaboration with MSU, the Selangor Zakat Board and the Bukit Jelutong Tengku Ampuan Mosque), celebrating the orphans watching Boboi Boy and watching the 2019 Selangor Sultan Cup football match, participating in sacrifice activities with children- orphans, donate to schooling, get sponsorship for orphans to shop for Hari Raya essentials and distribute donations to orphans throughout the State of Selangor.

In 2020, YIDE organized a friendly session and the presentation of donations to representatives of orphanages under the supervision of Yayasan Islam Darul Ehsan, distributed Phase I donations to orphans at the 63rd Independence Celebration, got sponsorship from BERNAS to donate 100 baskets of rice for the home orphans supervised by YIDE, get sponsorship for donations of basic food aid in conjunction with Ramadan 1441H and donations of supplies of wet food and sugar, distribute disinfectant liquid to orphanages around the state of Selangor and distribute basic food to orphans' homes during the Movement Control Order ( MCO).

In 2021, YIDE has distributed laptop donations and cash donations to YIDE-supervised orphanages through Baitumal MAIS donations, contributed school supplies for the 2021 session, a personal donation program by His Royal Highness the Raja Muda of Selangor for the construction of the YIDE Orphanage Complex , a program to receive a corporate donation of RM 100,000.00 for the Infaq Orphans Fund by HM the Raja Muda of Selangor.

Hopefully the noble efforts carried out by YIDE and MAIS as well as all the contributors who are concerned about caring for orphans will be rewarded appropriately in the afterlife as the words of His Majesty the Prophet SAW which means,

A person who takes care of an orphan who belongs to him or someone else, he and I are like these two fingers (the Prophet SAW gestured with his two fingers) in heaven ". (Muslim history no. 2983).
