True Story – The Colourful Moments of Conversion Ceremonies

A conversion ceremony is never just a formal event — it is a deeply meaningful moment that touches the heart. Throughout my experience guiding many individuals into Islam, from the past until today, I have met people from every walk of life. Some came from Chinese and Indian backgrounds, some from Sabah and Sarawak, and some even from abroad. There were children, adult men, women, and even the elderly. Each one carried a unique story that was never the same as another.

A Funny Story: “Converting Multiple Times”

One of the most amusing experiences was when someone I had helped convert returned the following month… to convert again.
Apparently, he had recited the shahadah nearly ten times at different places!
Although it sounded strange, we should not judge from the outside.
Perhaps there were reasons that led him to repeat the declaration.
In truth, each shahadah still stands as a witness to the sincerity of a heart seeking the truth.

A Brave Story: The Schoolboy

There was once a young schoolboy who came alone, without his parents’ knowledge, wanting to embrace Islam. His courage was extraordinary.
But procedures must be followed — for anyone under 18, parental consent is required.
So I gently told him:

“Adik, wait until you turn 18, then come back and we will register it properly.
In the meantime, continue learning about Islam. InsyaAllah, Allah will protect your heart.”

SubhanAllah… his passion was so inspiring. Even at such a young age, he had already learned so much about the religion.

A Touching Story: The Elderly Chinese Man Who Searched for Years

One story that truly moved my heart was an elderly Chinese man who came solely to register his conversion.
He was not new to Islam — he had studied it for over 20 years.
He could already recite surahs from the Quran, compare scriptures from different religions, and finally chose Islam as his path.

But a heavy challenge lay ahead.
He had a family — a wife and children who were not Muslim.
Worry was written clearly on his face, fearing that his conversion might break his marriage.

According to a public fatwa from Al-Kafi Li Al-Fatawi by the Mufti’s Office:

When a non-Muslim man converts to Islam while his wife remains non-Muslim or a People of the Book, the status of their marriage is paused until her ‘iddah ends.
If the wife embraces Islam during the ‘iddah period, their marriage remains valid.
If the ‘iddah ends and she still has not embraced Islam, their marriage is dissolved.
(See: Al-Muhadzdzab by Imam Al-Syairazi, 2/456.)

With hope in his heart, he returned home to discuss this with his wife.
My prayer is that Allah grants light at the end of his journey, and that his family is guided together.

Conclusion

Every conversion story is a unique journey of the heart.
Some are humorous, some are full of bravery, and some demand great sacrifice.
But they all share one ultimate purpose:
the search for truth and peace within Islam.
